FELINE POST SURGERY CARE

  • If possible, keep your cat indoors only for 5 days. Keep females away from intact males.
  • No running, jumping, playing or other strenuous activity or baths for 7 to 10 days.
  • Do not give your cat any over the counter pain medications such as Advil, Aleve, Aspirin, Tylenol etc., as it would cause life threatening illness and death in cats! Do not give your cat any medications unless prescribed by a veterinarian.
  • Give your cat water and half the normal amount of food tonight. Your cat can return to their normal feeding amount and schedule tomorrow. If your cat is a kitten, feed it their normal amount of food and water tonight at their regular feeding times. Do not change your cat’s diet during the recovery period or feed table scraps, or milk as this could cause complications.
  • Check the incision site twice daily. Check for signs of infections such as discharge, redness, swelling, heat, discoloration, odor, or pain. Keep the incision clean and dry. Do not let your cat lick or chew at their incision. If this happens your cat may need to wear a special collar to prevent it. Unless otherwise noted, there are no sutures (stitches) to be removed.
  • Monitor your cat’s appetite, urination, and defecation. Appetite should return gradually within 24 hrs of surgery. Your cat should urinate within 24 hrs of surgery and defecate within 24 to 36 hrs of surgery. If your cat is lethargic more than 24 hrs after surgery, has diarrhea or vomiting please contact your regular veterinarian.
